As fate would have it I am finally in Singapore. I slept through all of my plane rides and am absolutely loving it. First thoughts? It is HOT. HOT and HUMID. I would venture to say that the humidity levels are even higher than in Costa Rica. I have been pretty jet-lagged these past few days (got in Wednesday evening) but I managed to 1. learn how to take public transportation 2. go shopping and 3. go sightseeing in the short time that I’ve been here.
1. Public Transportation in Singapore consists of busses, the MRT (mass rapid transit), and taxis. The MRT is basically like Montreal’s subway system, very efficient. It bypasses traffic congestion, it is super cheap, fast, and extraordinarily clean. Montreal should take a cue from Sing cleanliness-wise.
2. Shopping. Where do I even begin?! Singapore is a shopping MECCA. I went to Orchard, the best shopping area, and I have never seen this kind of consumerism in my life. I’m torn – it’s awe-inspiring and completely grotesque at the same time. Imagine a 6+ floor mall decked out with the likes of Hermès, Chanel, Celine, Van Cleef and pretty much any premiere designer you can imagine. Done? Okay…multiply that by 5+ malls all within a 4 block radius of each other. Scary? Yes. It seems like there is a never-ending supply and demand for designer goods. One of the malls I went to is called ION, check it out for a mere taste of what Orchard has to offer.
3. Sightseeing. I went to China Town today! The China Town in Singapore is WAY cooler than Montreal…not to mention infinitely cleaner. CT boasts beautiful red lanterns, balloons and colourful buildings. I also caught a short glimpse of Marina Bay Sands, a world-class luxury casino and hotel designed by Moshe Safdie (Habitat 67!). I swear, it looks like Vegas on crack, even from afar. The SkyPark is the crown jewel of MBS, an immense boat-like structure atop the 3 towers. I will be swimming on top of the world shortly!
Aaaaandd back to music. A few months ago I wrote a post on Russ Chimes and his Midnight Club EP. Stellar! What I did not include was his 5-part Expressway mixes (part 5 was JUST released!) Each part is approximately 1 hour long and it should go without saying that these are amazing pre-gaming mixes. They are completely different than the MC EP in that they weren’t created in conjunction with mini movies to form a story. Nevertheless, you don’t want to miss these. The mixing is super chill and have been played multiple times on my iTunes.
